Postoperative exostosis of the xiphoid process: a contraindication for precordial thump.

چکیده
A 79-year-old man was admitted for aortic valve replacement 10 years after coronary surgery. The computed tomography (CT) scan showed a 5—6-cm-long bony structure originating from the distal sternum with its tip directed towards the right ventricle (Fig. 1). The structure was resected (Fig. 2) and histopathological examination revealed an exostosis. Fig. 1. 3D CT scan showing impingement of the right ventricle by the exostosis of the xiphoid process. Fig. 2. Distal part of sternum and exostosis (white) after resection. Histo-pathological evaluation reveals bone tissue.

Simple mechanical methods for cardioversion: defence of the precordial thump and cough version.
A prospective study was made of the value of the precordial thump and of cough version in life threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Of about 5000 medical and surgical patients, 68 were treated for persistent ventricular tachycardia and 248 for ventricular fibrillation, 86 of whom had presented outside hospital. Mechanical intervention was successful in 26 incidents occurring in 23 patients. Ele...

متن کاملHeterotopic Ossification of the Xiphoid Process after Abdominal Surgery for Traumatic Hemoperitoneum
Heterotopic ossification of the xiphoid process is extremely rare, with only three cases previously reported. However, the surgical pathology for postoperative elongation of the xiphoid process after abdominal surgery has not yet been reported. We report a case of the postoperative elongation of the xiphoid process, 8 years after abdominal surgery for traumatic hemoperitoneum in a 53-year-old m...

متن کاملTreatment of monitored out-of-hospital ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia utilising the precordial thump.
BACKGROUND Few studies have described the value of the precordial thump (PT) as first-line treatment of monitored out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) from ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT). METHODS Patient data was extracted from the Victorian Ambulance Cardiac Arrest Registry (VACAR) for all OHCA witnessed by paramedics between 2003 and 2011. Adult pati...
